Family Night

4/20/2018

Hey guys! This week’s blog is about the upcoming family night at the end of the year. We were asked to select videos from this year that we would like to showcase at the family night.
Throughout the year, my partner, Mia Matsunaga and I did several projects and I learned so much from each and every one of the projects that we’ve done. Our first project was our King Kaumualii Statue video, which was quite a process. We began in the summer, then continued in the fall, but we managed to finish it on time. One of the reasons this video is an option for me to showcase at family night is because, it will always remind me of my very first video I worked on with my partner. One project I will never forget.
Another video I have in mind to showcase is, my personal PSA that we did in the third quarter. Where we had to come up with an idea and edit our own PSA’s. Our peers were allowed to help by acting, but we had to do the filming and editing. I decided this video to be one of my options to showcase because it was my first and only project I did on my own. There was difficulties during the process, but majority of it turned out exactly how I wanted it to be.
The last project I have selected as an option to showcase at family night is, my personal STN trip recap. I did my very best to make it fun to watch and add in a little from every place we went to, things we did, etc. I hope it entertains the ones who watch it since it definitely did for me. Some parts I think would need a little more work, but so far so good.
This school year was an amazing experience I will forever remember. I can’t wait to see how this family night will go and the videos that my peers have selected to showcase from this year. Thanks for reading!

STN Reflection

Hey guys! This week’s blog is an STN reflection. Overall, this year's STN trip was a blast! If I was granted the opportunity to redo the whole trip again, I would take it. At first I thought going on my birthday wouldn't be that fun or exciting since I would be spending it on a plane, but with my media family it was  even better than I thought!

There are too many highlights on this trip to point out every single one, but I would like to point out some of my favorite highlights from both Tennessee and Boston. We made new friends in Tennessee who were also from Hawaii, and were so  generous to help us out when we needed it. I am so thankful for all their help and I hope we reunite with them again one day. Line dancing was one of the best highlights of the trip. Visiting the Tennessee Titans Stadium was super cool to visit as well. And of course the STN Convention itself was the main highlight of our trip. It got very hectic but it was all worth it. While in Boston, riding the trains and subways to get to places, was very interesting. Visiting Harvard for the first time ever, was a big honor especially to see in person. Playing in snow was probably the best part. People come to Hawaii for the sandy beaches, but when we go to the mainland, we go for the snow!
             In all,
I've learned a lot from my classmates. Sticking together is one thing. Since we constantly had to use the buddy system, I guess you could say that we grow closer in a “one-on-one” get to know each other way. Another thing I learned from my classmates is, positivity. During the trip, we were given the tasks to   "watch” our classmates for a whole day each day and “take notes” on their positive behavior. Then we write down on our cards in the evening, what we’ve observed about that person. This definitely helped me learn more about my classmates. Especially when paying close attention to them and their actions. It sounded creepy at first, but you learn to enjoy the people you’re with and learn more about them.
I learned so much about myself this experience. From the little things such as trying not to fall asleep or else you will be bombarded with pictures of you sleeping, to the profound lessons in life like, not everything is about winning and what matters is how far you’ve gotten from the start while having fun doing what you love. I feel these lessons are definitely what you have to apply to yourself and remember that because, life comes across many competitive times. If you win, don’t forget to stay humble and respect others effort and hard work. And if you lose, celebrate others' wins and congratulate those who have worked hard to get where they are. I’ve learned so much this trip and I
hope that one day I can go again.

In conclusion, I’ve had so much fun and I’m very grateful for my teacher, family, and friends , for making this all possible. Helping with fundraisers, providing words of encouragement, donating to help out with the funds for this trip, I am forever grateful for all that you have done. Thank you to my CKTV media classmates, you guys are the best! Also, thank you to the movie trailer team. For teaching me so much and guiding me during this school year. I’ve learned a lot from you guys. I wish you all best luck at next year’s STN! Thank you for making this the best year ever! Xoxo

STN Day 11

Hey everyone! Today was our last full day in Boston and we got to sleep in a little bit longer. We went to eat breakfast in the lobby and then went to a shopping center that had Dick's Sporting Goods, TJ Maxx, Old Navy, etc. Then we went to ice skate for a couple of hours. It was so much fun! I love ice skating and majority of my classmates seemed to enjoy themselves too.  After ice skating we ate lunch at the food court in another mall. Then went lsat minute shopping for a couple hours. It was the last time we could shop before heading home.  When we were done shopping, we ate at Applebee’s for dinner and went back to the hotel to pack up our things. It was difficult for me to fit everything in my suitcase because I had so much souvenirs and things that I bought. But it all worked out in the end. Thank you for reading my blogs about  my first STN  trip!

STN Day 10

Hi guys! Today is the tenth day of the STN trip! We had breakfast in the lobby, then we put our warm clothes on and went outside since it was snowing! We played in the snow and took pictures for probably forty minutes or so until it got too cold. The original plan was that we were supposed to go to Concord Middle School to present and teach them things about our class and what we do in media, but since we were snowed in, we stayed in our rooms to have study hall and work on homework. So we did that for a few hours. I got tired after a while so I took a short nap then I heard that everyone was going outside to play in the snow again. So we went on a hill that had fresh snow across the parking lot to play over there. When we got back, we were all just about to go into our rooms when all of a sudden the fire alarm went off and smoke was spreading in the hallways. So we evacuated the building for a few minutes then they said we could sit in the lobby while we waited for the all clear. Turned out that there was no fire and we were safe. After all the chaos, we went back to our rooms to get ready to go to lunch. For lunch, we ate at Panera Bread. Some of us had Mac and Cheese and others had soups, salads, or sandwiches. It was delicious and most of us have never eaten there before. After that, we drove down to the train station and took a train to downtown Boston. We walked around the city until we reached the " Freedom Trail." Where we saw Paul Revere’s house and the Old North Church of Boston. The sites we wanted to visit were closed so we couldn’t take go inside the places. After that, some of us wanted to go to Peet’s Coffee so we hung out in there for a little while and went back out walking. Then, we came across the Quincy Market where they had a food court and stores to shop. They had Boston Lobstah rolls (Boston Lobster) and Chowdah (Boston Chowder) . When we were finished with dinner, we walked back to the train station and caught the train back to Norwood then drove to the hotel. Then we showered, did some homework and went to sleep.

STN Day 9

Hey guys! Today is the ninth day of the STN trip! This morning we had breakfast again in the lobby that the hotel served for us. Then, we went to Norwood High School to watch them do their morning announcements and to get a tour of their high school. My first thoughts on walking into their studio was mind blowing! It looked like what you see on national television news channels and what not. They had chairs, an anchoring table, and camera crew, flat screen tv’s, lighting, nice backgrounds, etc. It was so fancy! In the other room, they had all their control panels and media crew that made sure everything was in order and that everything would go smooth enough to go live in front of the school. When morning announcements finished, their teacher, Mr. Brunt, gave us a tour of the school. It was interesting about the sizes of their lockers compared to ours, and the way the hallways are in a mainland school compared to our Hawaii school. He showed us the gym, then a classroom where we presented our slideshow like we practiced. Lots of students had many questions after the presentation. When we were done, the P.E teacher took us to try snow shoes! We put it on our shoes and then went outside to " exercise" inside the snow! It was so fun! The snow was more like ice since it was solid. Then, we went back inside and returned them. When the school tour was over, they gave us T-shirt’s that all students have that says kindness on it with the school logo. After we left the school, we went to this mall to eat lunch at Five Guys. A couple people went to eat somewhere else but the rest of us had burgers from Five Guys. Then, we split up for shopping. I went to bath and body works and some of my friends came along. After buying stuff from bath and body works, our group split up and some others went to Claire’s and other stores while Mr. M, Mia, Aunty Aileen, Mia’s brother, Shayne, Natalie, and I, went to the Gillette stadium. Home of the Patriots. We looked around their team store then we went to a sports store then drove to another shopping center which had Trader Joe’s and A.C Moore crafts. So I bought a few items from each place. Once all of us were finished shopping, we went back to the hotel rooms and played cards, etc. until dinner time. The hotel served us cheese and pepperoni pizza, salad, and drinks. Everyone was tired early so we went back to our rooms to relax, and do other things until we realized it started snowing very little outside! So immediately everyone put their warm jackets and shoes on and went outside to play in the snow! When we were done we went back to our rooms to shower and get ready for bed.

Hi guys! Today is the eighth  day of our STN trip! Today we woke up early to have a complimentary breakfast that our hotel inn served in the lobby. We had cereal, pastries, fruits, sausages, eggs, and waffles that you can make yourself! It was such a yummy filling breakfast! After that, we got ready to go to a train station that would take us all the way to Harvard Square. Our new friend Kahunui, an alumni from Waianae in the island of O’ahu, got a full ride scholarship to Harvard and was generous to give us a tour of the campus. When the tour was over, we shopped for things from a Harvard store then ate at a Mexican restaurant nearby. Then, we caught the subway back and went to eat dinner at Conrad’s restaurant. We ate dinner with some students from Norwood High School who were really nice and had lots of questions for us as much as we had for them. I ate a cheeseburger with fries and my classmates had steaks, meats, cheeseburgers, etc. When we finished dinner, we went back to our hotel to practice presentations for the Norwood High School students until 10:30pm. Then, we went to our rooms to get ready for the next day.

STN Day 7

Today is the seventh day of our STN trip! We woke up early to eat breakfast then checked out of the hotel and rode a hotel bus to the airport. When we got to the airport we checked in our luggage, went through security then got some food to eat and things to drink after having a quick breakfast earlier. Turned out we had a gate change so we had to walk a little further down. Then, we had a 2 hour plane ride to the LaGuardia airport in New York City!! I was excited but we only had a few minutes for a layover to get to Boston. The plane ride to Boston was a little bit over an hour. When we got to Boston I thought it was so cold! The temperature was around 25°F, so immediately I put on another jacket for a layer. Then, we left the airport to go and rent our cars for the rest of the week then drove to the hotel that we’re staying at. It’s a pretty cozy hotel and has two beds in one room, another bed in the other room, and both rooms have bathrooms. We got comfortable then we went to eat dinner at an Italian restaurant called Bertucci’s. I had a calzone. It was delicious! After that, we went to Walmart to pick up a few things to have for the rest of the week and then went back to our hotel to settle down and relax. My roommates and I played cards and had cup of noodle since it was nice and warm. Then, we got ready for bed and went to sleep. See you in the next blog!

STN Day 6

Today is the sixth day of the STN trip! Today, we woke up early to eat breakfast in the rooms since today was the day of closing ceremony and sadly the last day of STN! By far, this was one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. I can’t believe we’ve gotten this far prepping for competition and we’re appreciative that it payed off. We waited for closing ceremony to start, in line for an hour! Finally, we were accepted to go in and take our seats. The fun part was that our group got from row seats and sat next to the rest of the State of Hawaii schools on the left hand side of the stage. The closing ceremony lasted from 10am to a little over 12pm. CKTV Media Productions placed honorable mention in anchoring, second place for spot feature, and third place for PSA, and first place for Crazy 8’s News Magazine! I was so stunned with excitement of how much we’ve accomplished. I was very happy for our teams and how hard their work paid off. Unfortunately, our movie trailer team did not place anything, even when we’ve had lots of practice. But I am glad that there sure was improvement in our movie trailer that we entered compared to the previous ones. I really do see the improvement that we’ve done compared to before and I’m very happy about that. After, closing ceremonies, we took a group picture with the schools of Hawaii. I found it really touching that someone led everyone to sing " Hawai’i Pono’i," our state anthem song. It really represents who we are and what we do. After all the picture taking and celebrations, we went to our rooms to drop off things and get ready to go to the mall for the rest of the day. We walked to the mall to have lunch and shop for a few hours until around 7pm when the mall closes. Our friends from the Big Island wanted to get together before they were heading back home and we wouldn’t see them again. For a while at least what I’d like to say. So we talked story and hung out for a little while until we were supposed to go back to our rooms. Then, we all showered and ate snacks in the rooms and hung out reminiscing over our passed experience this week in Tennessee. I would definitely visit again.

STN Day 5

Today was our fifth day of STN! I had to wake up extra early because our contest was at 8:30am. So we made sure all our things were packed, ate breakfast in the rooms, and headed down to pick up the movie trailer package from downstairs. Our topic was " in bloom" where we could make up any thing we want that had to deal with the topic. It was difficult to think about especially since it was just two words and a specific topic. We started filming all morning til around 12pm. Then, Evan and Kai started editing the trailer. I went to breakout sessions with some of our other classmates who were not competing. We met Rae Kanoa who is popular from a channel called teens react. After that, we watched a documentary about safety and gun violence from the Florida school shooting. Then, we went to dinner at Cracker Barrel and left there at almost 9pm. Our new friends from the Big Island wanted to meet up and asked us if we were going to the St. Paddy’s party at the convention center which ends at 10pm. We had about less than an hour because we went up to the rooms then went down to the party which took up more time but still I had a great time. It was kind of boring at first because the songs they were playing was songs people have barely heard (in my opinion) but then it got better. It was a pretty fun night, even if we only had an hour left it was better then nothing. I had so much energy when we got to the room. Then, we got ready for bed and went to sleep. See you in the next blog!

STN Day 4

Hey guys! Today was our fourth day of STN! We woke up early and ate breakfast in the rooms since my roommates had competition today. Janine had anchoring and Mia had Spot Feature. Mia and Aunty Aileen went down to get the Spot Feature packet while Janine and I stayed in the room for a little while since breakout sessions didn’t start til 9am and Janine’s team didn’t have to start til 10am. Once we went to our assigned places, the people who were not competing today had to go to breakout sessions downstairs. We went to 3 different sessions and the third was interesting since it was about comedy. After that, we went to eat lunch upstairs which was pizza. It was really delicious pizza! Then, we went to the last breakout session and headed to see the Keynote guest speaker in the convention room. It was from 3/5pm! But we learned a lot about different families and what they go through. Then, we went to our rooms to get ready to walk to the mall for dinner. This time I had Panda Express. Then, we went to Dairy Queen to get blizzards. We walked back and had to go to the Excellence awards. We didn’t place for our first time trying out for the film category, but it was worth a try and we did our best. Although, some Hawaii schools did place, we still cheer them on. The excellence awards has great film entries from amazingly talented schools and I was so thrilled to see what work they’ve done. The awards continued until around 10pm. Then, we went back to our rooms to get ready for the next day.
